Indian Wedding Photographer Malaysia: What You Should Know Before Booking One

Having photographed Indian weddings across Malaysia, I've learned that every celebration has its own rhythm, traditions and wonderfully unpredictable moments. Choosing the right Indian wedding photographer Malaysia has to offer isn't only about finding beautiful photographs, it's about finding someone who understands what those moments mean.

Indian weddings are absolutely beautiful.

They are also… a lot. 😂

One minute everything is calm and I’m photographing the bride quietly getting ready.

Five minutes later, the groom has arrived, someone is asking where the garlands are, another person is looking for an aunty who has mysteriously disappeared, the ceremony is about to begin and suddenly everyone needs a photo.

And honestly?

I love it.

After photographing Indian weddings over the years, one thing I’ve realised is that photographing an Indian wedding isn’t simply about having a good camera or taking pretty pictures.

There are traditions to understand, families to navigate, emotions happening everywhere at once and important moments that sometimes last only a few seconds.

So if you're currently searching for an Indian wedding photographer in Malaysia, here are a few things I genuinely think you should know before choosing one.

1. Your Photographer Should Understand What Is Actually Happening

This sounds obvious.

But hear me out.

Indian weddings are filled with traditions, and depending on your family, religion and background, your ceremony can look completely different from someone else's.

As photographers, knowing what is likely to happen next gives us a HUGE advantage.

Because there are moments where you don't get to say:

"Sorry, can we do that again?"

😂

You can't exactly ask everyone to put the thaali back and repeat the ceremony because the photographer wasn't ready.

Some moments happen in seconds.

Your photographer needs to understand the flow of your ceremony, communicate with you beforehand and know which moments are especially important to you and your family.

This is also why I love having a consultation before the wedding.

Tell me everything.

Tell me what's happening.

Tell me about that one tradition your family does differently.

Tell me that your grandmother is the most important person you want photographed.

Tell me that your dad will pretend he's completely fine but you KNOW he's probably going to cry.

These little details matter.

Because I don't want to simply photograph a wedding.

I want to photograph your wedding.

2. Indian Weddings Are Not Just About the Bride and Groom

Obviously, you're the stars of the show.

Don't worry. 😂

But some of my favourite photographs from weddings aren't even photographs of the couple.

It's your mum looking at you while you're getting ready.

Your dad quietly watching everything happening.

Your grandparents blessing you.

Your siblings annoying you five minutes before the ceremony.

Your friends laughing somewhere in the corner.

The tiny reactions happening around you when something emotional happens.

Those photographs might not feel important while you're planning your wedding.

Twenty years later?

They can become some of the most precious photographs you own.

This is why I personally love candid wedding photography.

Of course we'll take the beautiful portraits.

We'll fix the saree.

We'll arrange the veil.

We'll find your best angle.

We'll make sure everyone gets that gorgeous frame for Instagram. 😂

But between all those photographs, I'm constantly watching what is happening around me.

Because your wedding isn't a photoshoot.

It's a story.

3. Please Give Us Enough Time for Getting-Ready Photos 😭

Okay.

Photographer confession.

One of the most common problems we face isn't bad lighting.

It isn't rain.

It isn't even a difficult venue.

It's…

THE TIMELINE.

😂

Getting-ready photographs are some of the most beautiful photographs of the entire day.

Your jewellery.

Your saree.

Your lehenga.

The flowers.

Your mum helping you.

Your bridesmaids.

Your portraits before everything gets beautifully chaotic.

But sometimes we arrive and hear:

"Thenukah, ceremony starts in 20 minutes."

Ma'am.

😭

Now we're all doing cardio.

If beautiful getting ready photographs are important to you, give your photographer enough breathing room.

I would much rather have time to observe the room, find the best light, photograph your details properly and let you actually enjoy the experience.

Rushing shows.

Not necessarily because the photographs will be bad .. we'll make it work ... but because you

deserve to enjoy that part of your wedding too.

Your wedding morning shouldn't feel like you're trying to catch an AirAsia flight when the gate is closing.

4. Two Photographers Can Make a Huge Difference

Indian weddings have a LOT happening simultaneously.

While one photographer is photographing the bride, something beautiful might be happening with the groom.

While we're photographing the ceremony, your parents might have an emotional reaction.

While one camera is focused on you, another angle can capture your family.

That's one reason our wedding packages at Thenukah Krishnan Photography include two professional photographers.

Just like the Tamil song ....Two two two two two two two two two two two, i love you two nijamma i love 2!

It allows us to tell the story from more than one perspective.

And for a big Indian wedding, I genuinely value that.

You only experience your wedding from where you're standing.

Photography lets you see everything you missed.

5. Your Photographer's Style Matters More Than You Think

Before you book any wedding photographer, please actually look through their work.

And I don't mean three Instagram posts. 😂

Look at full weddings.

Look at skin tones.

Look at indoor photographs.

Look at outdoor photographs.

Look at ceremonies.

Look at candid moments.

Look at night receptions.

Ask yourself:

“Can I imagine MY wedding looking like this?”

Every photographer sees the world differently.

Some love bright and airy photographs.

Some love true to life colours.

Some love very traditional posed photography.

My personal style leans towards dreamy, cinematic, artistic and emotional storytelling.

I love photographs that feel like they could be a scene from a movie GVM or Maniratnam directed but still feel like you.

That's also why choosing a photographer shouldn't only come down to price.

You're choosing the person whose eyes will become the way you remember your wedding.

Okay wow, I shall move on before getting emotional. 😂

6. Candid Doesn't Mean “Zero Posing”

I hear this quite often:

"We want candid photos because we don't know how to pose."

GOOD.

Most people don't know how to pose.

Why would you? 😂

You're not supposed to spend your weekends practising wedding poses in front of the mirror.

When I say I love candid photography, it doesn't mean I'm going to abandon you in front of the camera and say:

"Okay. Be candid."

WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? 😭

Sometimes I'll guide you.

Where to stand.

Where to put your hands.

Walk this way.

Look at each other.

Come closer.

Ignore me.

And sometimes I'll shut up completely and let the moment happen.

The goal is to create photographs that look effortless without making you feel like you need modelling experience to get them.

7. Tell Your Photographer About Important People

This one is really important.

Before your wedding, tell us who matters.

Of course we'll photograph immediate family and all the obvious people.

But photographers can't automatically know every relationship in a room of hundreds of guests.

Maybe there's an aunt who practically raised you.

Maybe your grandfather travelled across the world to attend.

Maybe your childhood best friend is flying in just for your wedding.

Tell us.

Those photographs matter.

And while we're talking about family photos…

Please make a list.

Please.

I'm begging nicely. 😂

Group photographs become approximately 900% easier when someone knows who needs to be in them.

Otherwise:

"Where is amma?"

"Amma went downstairs."

"Where is akka?"

"Taking selfie."

"Where is uncle?"

Nobody knows.

😭

A little organisation beforehand saves SO much time.

8. Your Wedding Doesn't Need to Look Like Someone Else's Wedding

Pinterest is wonderful.

Instagram is wonderful.

I love mood boards.

Send them to me.

But don't become so focused on recreating someone else's wedding photographs that you forget to experience your own.

Your venue is different.

Your outfits are different.

Your family is different.

Your chemistry is different.

Your story is different.

Use inspiration to communicate what you love, but leave some room for your photographer to create.

Some of my favourite photographs happen when nobody planned them.

The light suddenly changes.

Someone laughs.

The wind catches the veil.

A parent gets emotional.

The couple forgets there's a camera around.

That's the magic.

You can't Pinterest-board everything.

9. Choose Someone You Actually Feel Comfortable With

Indian wedding reception photography in Malaysia

This might be one of the most underrated pieces of advice in this entire article.

Your photographer is going to be around you for a LOT of your wedding day.

We're there when you're getting ready.

We're there during emotional moments.

We're standing nearby during your ceremony.

We're organising your family.

We're taking you away for portraits.

We may be with you when you're stressed, excited, overwhelmed, hungry, emotional and wondering why you decided to invite this many people.

😂

You need to feel comfortable with us.

Because when you're comfortable, you look comfortable.

And that changes photographs completely.

I don't want my couples spending their wedding day worrying about whether they're standing correctly every five seconds.

I want you to enjoy yourself.

Let me worry about the photographs.

10. Pretty Photos Are Lovely. Memories Are Better.

I obviously want to create beautiful photographs.

That's literally my job.

But there's something I've come to appreciate more and more as a wedding photographer.

A technically perfect photograph isn't always the photograph that means the most.

Sometimes it's the photograph of your mother fixing your jewellery.

Your dad trying very hard not to cry.

Your grandmother smiling at you.

Your partner looking at you when nobody else notices.

Your friends absolutely losing their minds on the dance floor.

Those are the photographs that bring you back.

Your wedding will probably take months ..sometimes more than a year to plan.

And then somehow…

it's over in a day.

That's the slightly cruel thing about weddings.

All that planning.

All those WhatsApp groups.

All those decisions.

All that money.

All that arguing over whether the flowers should be ivory or baby pink.

😂

And suddenly it's finished.

The photographs are what stay.
